Lake Erie Atrazine Loading Trends (3/14/05 version)

Although no atrazine loading reduction targets have been set for Lake Erie, the 2004 Lake Erie Quality Index (LEQI) recognizes that sediment, phosphorus, nitrate, and pesticides are the key nonpoint sources of degradation to the Lake.

Consequently Lake Erie atrazine loading trends have been measured since 1983, as shown below. The amount of atrazine loading reduction that can occur is tied to the recommended sediment reductions for the same watershed, as atrazine attaches to soil particles. Therefore, Lake Erie sediment reduction targets are proxy indicators of atrazine loading reduction potential.
